Abortion by D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. For surgical abortion, you can expect to be in our office approximately 3 to 4 hours for abortion care up to 14 weeks of pregnancy and a a bit longer if you are having second trimester abortion care from 14 – 20 weeks.
A Woman’s Choice of Charlotte offers second trimester surgical abortion care up to 20 weeks of pregnancy with our female physician, completed in 1 day instead of the 2 day requirement of other clinics.
Abortion Care Procedure
Once you have completed the necessary Lab work, you will know your blood type as well as your vital signs, like any Dr. visit. Your Ultrasound will tell us the gestation (length) of your pregnancy. If any of these screenings reveal new information, we will have a conversation about the meaning or needs of the results. You will attend an informational session to review the abortion procedure and how to take good care of yourself when you return home. If you are interested, we will offer birth control information for future planning. This is a great time to ask questions. If you wish to speak privately to a counselor, just let us know. We’re here for YOU!
You will change into a surgical gown and have a seat in our surgical waiting room. You have TV and magazines available as well as relaxing adult pictures to color. You may want to read through the Patient Journals - stories, suggestions and support written by former patients. Please add your own thoughts for those who come after you. Here, we honor your hopes and dreams.
Some patients will be given extra medications and our Nurse will be watching over you. When called in for your abortion, you will be attended to by your Dr. and two medical assistants who will guide you through your procedure. The surgical abortion procedure by D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) consists of the gradual dilation (opening) of the cervix and the use of gentle vacuum aspiration to empty the contents of the uterus.
Abortion Care Procedure After 12 Weeks of Pregnancy
This procedure may be completed in 1 day or may require 2 days. On the first day, The physician will insert small expandable dilators (laminaria or dilapan) into the cervix to allow the cervix to slowly dilate. You will take some oral medication to assist in dilation and a pain reliever for any cramps you may experience. Your abortion procedure may then be completed in an hour, or more, on the same day.
If you are having a 2 day procedure, you will need to stay in the area overnight and return in the morning. When you return on the 2nd day, or later in the day if you are having a 1 day procedure, the laminaria or dilipan will be removed, you will be offered IV sedation and the procedure will then be completed.
This is the safest and most comfortable process for terminating a pregnancy at this stage.
