Jacksonville, FL: On International Safe Abortion Day, A Woman’s Choice is reminding the public of a simple fact: abortion is health care, and it should be a right available to everyone equally. Instead, access depends entirely on where you live. A Woman’s Choice, which operates clinics in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia, sees that inequality play out every day.
Our unique position providing abortion care across three states gives us a firsthand view of what happens when patients are forced to navigate dramatically different laws based on where they live, often having to cross state lines just to access care. Since the Dobbs decision, patients travel farther, spend more money, and must take more time off work and away from family obligations, piecing together transportation, childcare, lodging, and funding just to receive essential healthcare.
Recently, we cared for a patient who took an Uber from Florida all the way to our clinic in Danville, Virginia, to access abortion care. No one should have to travel hundreds of miles across multiple states and spend hundreds of dollars on transportation to receive healthcare. Yet for abortion patients, stories like this are the reality of accessing care.
Our staff sees both sides of this crisis. We care for patients in states where abortion access has been severely restricted, and we care for the patients who are pushed across state lines because those restrictions have made care inaccessible closer to home. Independent clinics like ours have been working hard with an interconnected network of providers, abortion funds, advocates, and community organizations working across state borders to make sure patients get the abortion care they want. However, it’s not always possible, and these inequities drastically push care further out of reach, especially for Black and Brown folks, minors, and people in unstable living conditions.
Having access to a safe abortion is about more than whether a procedure is medically available. It means accessing compassionate, evidence-based care in your own community without unnecessary political barriers determining how far you have to travel, how much you have to spend, or how long you have to wait.
On International Safe Abortion Day, we are proud to continue providing abortion care in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia. But we are also reminded of the unfortunate restrictions and barriers our patients face. Until everyone can access the care they need in their own communities, we will continue doing everything we can to meet patients wherever they are and help them get where they need to go.
